I have coached 1-1 a number of senior executives and leaders coming from large MNC to Fortune 500 companies. Even senior executives and leaders struggle in their own careers and leadership.
They could be stuck with:
a) landing a great job offer
b) how to lead and manage their team
c) getting the promotion they wanted
d) losing their momentum and starting to doubt themselves
Why is that so?
The good thing about 1-1 coaching is we help our clients to find out what were the root cause of their challenges which block them from accelerating in their careers.
We help them find their blind spots.
From my experience, one of the key reason for most senior executives and leaders is mostly because of their own limiting beliefs which affected their self-esteem.
When this happens, I work with my client to rewire their brain using a neuroscience based technique.
It’s no use telling someone to say “I am successful” or “I am a great leader” or “I am going to land the next C level role” when their brain does not even believe it.
In fact, it might even make them feel worse about themselves.
So what I do is I have a template written exercise my clients get to do which helps them to change perspective and by doing so, they start to condition their mind to think differently and only when the brain accepts it, then the affirmation will actually work.
A number of my clients found this exercise have helped them tremendously and they will always use this method when they face challenges.
So next time if you start doubting your own capability, try this simple method which I learn that can help you.
@ Think of the 3 best things you did well at end of the day or week
@ This could be an individual contribution or even as a team
Then I want you to say this…..
“This went well because I am …………..”
Let me give you an example that happened to a client who doubted herself.
Her team and her close a deal but she still doubted herself thinking she only played a small part.
To rewire her brain to think differently, she said this..
“I close a deal with my team because I am good at influencing.”
After using this technique, she started believing more in herself.
Another example….
“My team met the deadline because I am a good leader.”
The rule of thumb is to emphasize the “I AM” because the idea is to help us change the way we think about who we are. Because the first statement is proof of your success hence the brain will be more inclined to believe the 2nd statement.
Done often, you will be amazed how this will change your self-esteem.
Please do not underestimate how even a simple technique like this can change your results.
Try it next time.
